School Introduction

Where east meets west, where yesterday meets tomorrow ! 

Shanghai is the commercial and financial center of mainland China, and ranks fifth in the 2011 edition of the Global Financial Centres Index published by the City of London. In 2009, the Shanghai Stock Exchange ranked third among worldwide stock exchanges in terms of trading volume and sixth in terms of the total capitalization of listed companies, and the trading volume of six key commodities including rubber, copper and zinc on the Shanghai Futures Exchange all ranked first in the world.

Moreoover, because of Shanghai's status as the cultural and economic center of East Asia for the first half of the twentieth century, it is popularly seen as the birthplace of everything considered modern and cutting edge in China. Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) are no exceptions.

SJTU was founded in 1896 and is a C9 University in China (similar to the Ivy League in the US). SAIF was established at SJTU as a world-class educational institution on April 19th, 2009, against the backdrop of Shanghai’s continued growth as an international financial center, and with the goal of contributing to the prosperity of Shanghai’s financial industry and that of the Greater China region. Benefitting from the financial support of the Shanghai Municipal Government, SAIF’s mission is to cultivate the most talented young finance professionals in the region using internationally renowned faculty and to provide an open-platform think tank for both academic and applied endeavors. It is positioned as an incubator for future financial leaders, a think tank for policy makers, and a platform for leading-edge research and cross-cultural communication.

The Master of Finance (MF) program was established in the fall of 2009 and provides students with modern finance theories, sophisticated quantitative tools, high-level applied training, and practical industry knowledge of both Chinese and global markets over a two-year study period. Candidates for the MF program must have a strong analytical background. Coursework utilizes this preparation to provide students with the necessary skill sets of a financial professional in the fields of investment management, corporate finance, and risk management and financial engineering.

The curriculum presented is comparable to those offered by top international finance programs and offers a balanced structure, including training in theoretical, quantitative, and applied concepts. The teaching faculty is composed of world-class scholars and leading financial professionals applying the state of the art in innovative teaching methodologies. We augment this core strength with cutting-edge hardware and data and are proud of our financial trading lab, which was established in 2010 and rivals those of the top business schools in the world. It is equipped with 40 trading terminals displaying real-time data from New York, London, Chicago, Shanghai and other major financial markets around the world, allowing students to gain practical experience through hands-on learning.
